Together: A Theatrical Conversation — English Studies students reflect on intergenerational relationships on stage

On April 8th, the Teatre de l’Escorxador in Lleida hosted the premiere of Together: A Theatrical Conversation, a play created and performed by students from the University of Lleida as part of a Theatre Workshop. The performance served as the inaugural event for the International ENAS/NANAS Conference, dedicated to ageing and intergenerational relationships from a humanities perspective.

With a choral, physical, and visual staging, Together sprang from the personal experiences of 27 third- and fourth-year students from the English Studies degree and the double degree in Applied Languages and Translation / English Studies. Based on interviews conducted with older people in their environment as well as their own reflections on identity and the passage of time, the students explored key issues such as the meaning of belonging to a generation, the influence of ageing on who we are, the connections that link us to previous generations, and what we learn from their life stories.

Professor Núria Casado conceived and directed the project, and co-wrote the text with Guillem Mas, who also served as the first assistant director. The stage proposal also included collaboration from Inesa Shevchenko in the assistant direction, Jordi Cano in musical direction, Marta Casals in choreography, and Òscar Sánchez in technical coordination.

In addition to the students, Lleida-based actors Encarna Peinado and Jandro Olmo participated along with members from previous editions of the workshop, such as Sanae Ouazarf (also production assistant) and Professor Katerina Valentova on saxophone. Together, they wove a rich and generationally diverse stage conversation that also included space for children's voices, with special interventions from Edna Casado and Mark Shevchenko.

After its premiere at the Teatre de l’Escorxador, Together: A Theatrical Conversation was performed again in two evening shows on April 30th at the Faculty of Arts' Studio Stage, concluding a cycle of performances marked by creativity, collaboration, and intergenerational dialogue.
